A Personal Message

Welcome to:

"My Health Corner!"

Spring has sprung, the Daffodils are in bloom, the sun is out and everything is right in the world. Spring reminds me of gardens and farmers markets. The time of the year when we release ourselves from hibernation and fully embrace our greatest energy and potential, a time to bring in the fresh young buds of newness along with nature.

I believe this is why the term spring-cleaning is so popular. It is an opportunity to release the past and make changes that will propel us forward into the upcoming season. Allowing us to feel lighter in step.

Along with spring-cleaning comes a natural desire to take out the trash in our physical bodies as well. To assist you in this process, I am happy to announce Dawn Robinson as the new addition to the Portal to Healing Clinic staff. Dawn is a certified Colon Therapist and is graciously assisting with detoxification and spring-cleaning here at the clinic.

With Much Respect,

TAKING CARE OF THE MACHINE…

Our physical bodies carry us through our lives; house the creativity of the mind and the desires of the soul. This physical body allows us to express our personality through style, posture, gestures, and expression. Our physical body is intended to be a transparent lens through which we see the world. An effortless clean running machine if you will. The problems arise when the lens is no longer transparent.

When our lens through which we view the world becomes clouded we can no longer exude our energy outward into the greatest expression of what we were born to do. And that energy gets turned inward. Physical problems arise and cloud our lens. The lens becomes clouded anytime we are in pain, when we are physically hurting, when our digestive system starts burning, when we have Irritable bowel syndrome, hormonal imbalances, hot flashes, fatigue, joint pain, any physical condition that takes our attention away from what we were doing.

This ultimately affects the quality of our lives and how we interact with the people around us.

To ensure that our lens remains clear we need to maintain our physical body.

*This begins with drinking water. Hydration is so important for our joints and tissues so that they remain lubricated to receive nutrients from our blood. A good rule of thumb is 2 liters of water daily. If you drink caffeine you need to replace an additional glass of water for each cup of caffeine.

*Food is the next logical step. Food is our gasoline. This is the difference between putting high-octane gas in your machine or watered down gas in your machine. Putting good quality food in our system equals increased performance. Bad quality food equals fatigue and bogs down our system. Aside from exercise, food is the single most important thing we can do for our lens on a daily basis. We have the ability to change our health by what we put into our bodies every day.

This means that we can prevent and reverse disease.

We can manage our level of inflammation and weight through food, assist our digestion and hormonal levels, balance our blood sugar, build muscle and bone, decrease pain levels and ultimately increase our quality of life. When we eat unprocessed whole foods our bodies have the ability to mine that food for nutrients. Our body intelligently extracts the vitamins and minerals from those foods and uses them for our system to function optimally. So get excited! Dust off your juicer; break out the cookbooks and whatever else you need to feed yourself well!

My favorite new cookbook: “The Eat Clean Diet Cookbook” by Tosca Reno.

*Movement and Exercise. Move the machine! Remember that old car that you left over the summer and when you went to start it back up in the fall the battery was dead? Do you want that to happen to you? The rule of thumb when it comes to your health is: “If you don’t use it you lose it.” Please don’t lose it, because then we have to go on a sometimes-lengthy trek to find out where “it” went.

*Recognize and address your stress. Stress affects our physical form in the ways of tissue stiffness, shoulders stuck up to our ears, poor posture, weight gain, shallow breathing, insomnia, and many others. Aside from the physical strain, stress obscures our lens by keeping us focused on the minute details of life so that we loose contact with the big picture. Find an outlet for yourself to balance your stress, create some YOU time, and recharge.

*Do Not ignore the communication system of your machine. Symptoms are a way for our body to communicate with us. When we have a symptom that is obscuring our lens the best thing to do is address it and find out what our body is trying to say. Please, please do not ignore it. Your machine will only start making more noise. In natural medicine we find out what your body is trying to tell you and we fix it. We do not suppress the symptoms and we do not keep going in light of them. That is a sure way to ultimately blow your engine.

Let me ask you a question, “Would you ignore the check engine light in your car? Would you cut the wire on your check engine light? Sounds like a bad idea huh? Don’t do it to yourself. Find out why the engine light went on in the first place. Find a Naturopathic Doctor who can help you uncover the reasons for your symptoms.

Understand your machine through education.

I feel very strongly about one of the precepts of Naturopathic Medicine that I took under oath. Docere - Doctor as teacher. I am committed to health education. When you are educated about your machine you have the tools to create health. Health education and tools create power. The power to heal yourself. I am committed to maintaining and creating a clear lens for you so that you can do what you were put on this earth to do. This in turn affects everyone you come in contact with and leaves you with clarity to make the sometimes-tough decisions that life brings. May you have knowledge, clarity, and an unobscured lens through which you impact the world.
